Released on April 7th 2018, Theodicy is a 6-track EP from US metalcore band, A World Extinct.
Like a tightly wound spring that finally unleashes its power, A World Extinct erupts with brutal force. It’s so aggressive and groove-heavy and then it switches to melodic vocals and they’re a bit lacking in all honesty.
While it ticks all the metalcore boxes in regards to mixing frantic heaviness and clean-singing choruses, this is something that could really do with focusing on the heavy only.
The likes of Bridge Burner and A Love Like Thorns suffer the same problems. Absolutely crushing breakdowns and fire in their bellies rhythm is brought to a halt with clean vocals that are a bit too pop-punk to really enjoy alongside such a meaty sound.
There is no denying that it does begin to grow as the EP goes on and when it does begin to fit, such as on Castles in Air, it’s far more enjoyable. A mellow start kicks up a gear to deliver a disjointed but catchier affair. Alongside Weightless, these tracks go for a mellow, heavy, mellow approach instead of the other way around and it works far better.
Having been steadily improving as things go on, A World Extinct wrap things up with The Hunter and I, a furious finale that shows A World Extinct have plenty of talent and can deliver some of the heaviest riffs in modern metalcore.
