Album Review: Unmerciful – Wrath Encompassed (Willowtip Records)

Topeka, Kansas-based brutal death metal horde Unmerciful are set to unleash Wrath Encompassed, their angriest and most destructive album to date. Wrath Encompassed is the band’s third full-length, and first since signing with Willowtip Records.

Guitarist Clint Appelhanz comments on the album:

It’s almost time to unleash this audial onslaught! Let’s take a voyage to the furnace and become submerged in a celebration of suffering!

Willowtip Records will release Wrath Encompassed April 24th 2020 on CD, vinyl LP and digital formats.

There’s a fair bit of bile in Unmerciful’s new album, Wrath Encompassed. The sort of stuff that comes up as you vomit, burning the back of the throat and making you light-headed. It’s stomach-churning and headache-inducing but you feel better afterwards, the perfect encapsulation of what 9 tracks of brutal death metal will do.

The noise of uncultivated heaviness rises, the dealer of destruction bringing wild riffing and smash-mouth drums. All while the vocals howl and roar in desperate and horrifying fashion.

It’s wild from the very first angry expulsion to the very last angry guttural snarl and for the most part, completely uncomplicated. This is a beast that can’t be tamed, a beast that can’t be calmed or reasoned with. It is something that will rip chunks of flesh out in the most unmerciful of ways.

The band are uncompromisingly brutal. Wrath Encompassed is a fitting title as they rage and rage until there is nothing left but the sticky remnants of flesh and bile.
