Album Review: Spacegoat – Catharsis (Self Released)

Australian alternative metal band Spacegoat’s new EP, ‘Catharsis’, delivers a vulnerable experience of facing personal demons. It will be released on October 8th, 2021.

Covering a wide spectrum of metal subgenres; Spacegoat might seem as though they predominantly sit in the modern progressive metal area, but this EP has a lot of layers. Layers that make it a way more impressionable listen.

Yes, there are tons of progressive elements. Stuff that sounds super-powered but also mixed with djenty guitars and vocals that switch from clean and frantic sounding to dangerously aggressive. The first two tracks; Purge and Miasma show the array of ideas Spacegoat has and the talent they have to make it sound so authentic. Especially when dealing with hefty subjects and still delivering anthemic choruses.

The group’s distinctive sound continues to reach even greater heights with the melodramatic but vocally captivating Erased. The aggressive distortion and punchy metal noise of Dirty Fighter (a track that is about calling out back-stabbers and manipulators) and the passionate vibes of Nothing. Leading to the fabulous finale of Anemnesis, a track that can be undoubtably called an epic anthem. Downright beautiful and elegant, downright concentrated and intense, and downright progressive heaviness at its finest.

A massive release. There’s great things in the future for this band.
