Album Review: Puta Volcano – Amma (The Orchard)

Puta Volcano are building up their legacy and fanbase, one gig, one album, one song at the time. An already-acknowledged cog in the Greek heavy rock scene, the band formed in 2012, releasing their debut EP Represent Victory Below Eye. Puta Volcano’s debut full-length The Sun (2015) was recognized as a fresh and inspiring offering, and soon after the band started gigging regularly.

In 2017 Puta Volcano released their celebrated Harmony Of Spheres LP, a heady mixture of Seattle grunge, stoner and Southern rock, all with a South-Eastern European twist. The year that the quartet truly kicked on.

Now we look to 2020, with the forthcoming Amma LP. Due to be released on March 13th 2020.

With a hefty slab of grunge, Puta Volcano spread the fuzz around thickly here on their new album. While an obvious bit of influence, it’s far from dominated by this sound though. Instead Puta Volcano inject things with a bit more rock flair. Something that gives the likes of Entropica, First Light and Apnea a hell of a lot more groove and most importantly… energy.

Though there are also plenty of mellow and sickly dark numbers too like Venus Lullaby, Sugar Cube and Kassantra’s Gift.

Certainly not a band you can pigeon hole easily, Puta Volcano have crafted a challenging album here. While constantly enjoyable there is no denying you literally don’t know what’s coming next. It could be an upbeat guitar driven number or it could be a low and fuzzy grungy effort that puts the impeccable vocals front and centre. Puta Volcano are not an easy band to read but that does makes Amma an exciting listen.

With 12 tracks in total, there’s plenty of grungy, stoner rock to sink your teeth into. It might not hold your attention completely to the end but is still an intriguing experience. Especially as Puta Volcano probe the mind with their unique style.
