Album Review: Odium – As The World Turns Black (Black Sunset/MDD)

The 8th full length release, As the World Turns Black by German melodic-thrash metallers, Odium comes as the band prepare to celebrate their 25th anniversary. The new album will be released on July 14th 2017 via Black Sunset & MDD.

Opening with an absolute bang, The End of Everything is a storming riff heavy piece of thrash metal. It’s excitingly heavy with a nice bit of groove layered throughout. Clearly not content with sitting back & dishing out an old school thrash sound, Odium mix up a classic style with a more modern edge to great results.

Point of No Return’s slamming beat, Blind’s methodical nasty groove & Revolution’s catchy riffing are just some of the many highlights of a damn fine album.

Those concerned that they might not be getting enough trash for their buck need not worry. It’s what Odium are ultimately about. Time is a Killer’s main riff backed up by a thumping drum beat is as thrash as you’re likely to get in 2017. Head-bangingly brilliant with top-notch growling vocals. It sticks with you long after it finishes.

The album, As the World Turns Black doesn’t always manage to get it quite right though. No Goodbye is overly long & a bit boring while the title track just fails to light a fire under things. Thankfully it ends on a high with the bone-jangling tune of Inside the Incubus.

A killer solo leaves a silly grin plastered across the face confirming that Odium are still one of the most interesting & exciting thrash metal bands out there.
