Album Review: Dee Snider – For The Love Of Metal (Napalm Records)
As the legendary frontman of Twisted Sister, Dee Snider is rightfully considered one of the world’s best rock vocalists. His rock credentials can’t be called into question after a career that has spanned 40+ years but it is a bit unusual to see him delve deeply into the well of heavy metal.
Dee’s 4th solo album is an out and out metal album. We’re talking leather pants, big hair and plenty of horn throwing…actually, maybe it’s not such a surprise turn from the enigmatic frontman!
The tempo doesn’t slow down until the album hits its third track, I Am the Hurricane. Before that Lies Are a Business and Tomorrow’s No Concern fire off fast-paced and fun heavy metal rhythms. Nothing to get too excited about but enjoyable, head-banging heaviness accompanied by Dee’s trademark sneer.
Later, Running Mazes kicks all kinds of chuggy metal ass, Become the Storm has a pretty catchy chorus and the softer tones of Dead Hearts (Love Thy Enemy) really standout. As contributions go, the likes of Howard Jones (ex-Killswitch Engage), Mark Morton (Lamb Of God), Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Joel Grind and Nick Bellmore (Toxic Holocaust) and Charlie Bellmore (Kingdom Of Sorrow) really add a lot the overall quality of the album.
That being said, even Dee’s exceptional vocal talents can’t help what are some pretty ordinary sounding tracks. Roll over You and Mask are particularly bland and unexciting.
There’s a good chance though, that For the Love of Metal might be Snider’s calling now that Twisted Sister has wrapped up. He certainly does his legacy justice.
