Album Review: Cult of Sorrow – Invocation of the Lucifer (Black Doomba Records)

Cincinnati’s resident doom metal overlords Cult of Sorrow are preparing to unleash a dire torrent of traditional doom upon the underground music scene this fall: Invocation of  the Lucifer, a second full-length that showcases the band’s songwriting growth and displays a ferocity not yet unleashed on the earlier releases.

Invocation of the Lucifer will be released on September 20th, 2019.

Sorrow

You have to sometimes wonder what a modern audience growing up on a diet of low, rumbling, feedback heavy and booming doom think when they put a record on like this. It’s a doom record but from the old school where it shares more in common with traditional heavy metal then anything else. Still exceptionally heavy but with clean singing and sharper, clearer riffs and a level of production that often conjures up incense heavy basements in the darkness.

Yes, Invocation of the Lucifer is delectably and deliciously evil sounding but it’s not until the fantastic Shaman that Cult of Sorrow really reveal themselves.

After a slow start with Come Infernal (it’s fine, just not exciting), it’s Shaman that sees the mist pour in from places unseen. The filthy riffing is dark and heavy but also catchy. The vocals acting as an invitation to join the Cult of Sorrow and to cap it off there is a thrilling guitar solo in the latter half. This is the track you play someone to show them how good Cult of Sorrow can be.

This is the band rolling as the riffs get heavier and the vocals get more twisted. Invocation a hefty tome of a track dropped on heads, Witch Dance a beckoning finger of death wrapped up in the filth of the dead and Souls of the Damned is like bearing witness to a sultry siren dance. Thrilling, sexy and exciting but you know you should run away.

After one of the bouncier beats with Burn (faster tempo and energetic groove), Satan’s Eyes brings back a methodical approach that slays it in the riff department and The Mirror puts the exclamation point on the album with an evil sounding finish.
