Formed in 2018 and hailing from Scotland, Coffin Mulch have garnered widespread acclaim in the death metal underground. Having released one demo and one EP, the vintage death metal band will release their debut album, ‘Spectral Intercession’ on June 30th, 2023, via Memeno Mori.
Combining a DIY aesthetic with punk roots and influences from the late 80s and early 90s death metal scene, Coffin Mulch are as heavy and hench as they come. Revealing a delightful old-school brutishness on this debut album.
A straight-forward slab of guttural and grim intensity from the very beginning, right through to the very end. Fans of feral and ferocious death metal will be right at home here. Coffin Mulch play fast, hit hard, and sound as coarse as sandpaper on a fresh wound.
It’s a strong debut release as Coffin Mulch certainly believe in what they are doing, have the talent to make a convincing statement, and deliver each track with the gusto of death metal purists. Their influences help give the album a rawer tone, but in this genre of metal, that just makes the abrasiveness even more appealing.
There are eight examples of Coffin Mulch’s havoc on display here and each has its own level of bludgeoning heaviness to offer. Sometimes not too fast, sometimes a bit more complex, sometimes with a guitar solo, sometimes sounding a bit ‘hardcore’, but always unrelentingly heavy. It’s good s**t.
