13 Days of Halloween Horror Interview: Kieran Scott (Ashen Crown)

As part of 2019’s 13 Days of Halloween, we here at Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life thought it would be fun to see if some of the bands and artists we love had any interest in horror. It turns out quite a lot do so we turned it into an interview.

1. First things first…introduce yourself please!

I’m known as Kieran and I’m the vocalist of Ashen Crown, graphic artist and music promoter/reviewer/producer.

2. What are your top 3 favourite horror movies and why?

The Original Day Of The Dead, the aesthetic, ambience and FX were just perfect and still holds up to this day plus the music is awesome, still watch it every now and then.

The remake of Funny games a psychological horror with no equal, the feeling of helplessness and uncomfortableness is so well done.

The Thing it’s just perfect, the unknown and body horror at its best genuinely disturbing and still holds today!

3. Do you remember your first experience with horror? Was it at a young age?

I saw Alien when I was 9 thanks to my sister and I was transfixed I loved everything about it and was also disturbed/ interested in horror films as a concept from then on.

4. What era of horror is your favourite & why?

Has to be 80s our optimism and technology we gained at that time and tools for directors to express fear and unknown on a public scale whereas before was not the case.

5. What frightens or creeps you out in horror?

Body horror but even then I’m not bothered anymore…too many horrors..

6. Who is your horror inspiration? Be it a director/actor/author etc.

Stephen king for sure, the variety of story’s with different themes and points are unrivalled, just look at how many adaptations there’s been and coming. There’s no one quite like him.

7. Do you enjoy modern horror or do you look to the past for your fix?

Each era have some fantastic films in them you just got to trawl through the crap and give things a shot with a open mind.

8. What horror movie is universally beloved that you just don’t like?

Paranormal Activity – it has no point but some people believe in ghosts so I guess to them it’s effective.

9. If you could shoot one horror cliché/trope into the sun to never be used again. What would it be?

Running away and falling….it’s so annoying.

10. Same question but about type/style. What type or style of horror would you happily never watch again?

Slashers – they are way too repetitive and never evolve or gain substance.

11. What gets you excited when watching horror?

BLOOD AND GORE!

12. Have you had any real life scary experiences? We’re talking supernatural or something that can’t be reasonably explained.

Went on a date with a girl who hated me and passively aggressively berated me the entire time, sometimes the real monsters are us.
